El suplente español Ferran Torres marcó en el minuto 106 para darle a su equipo la victoria por 1-0 sobre la vigente campeona, Argentina, en la Copa Mundial.

España dominó claramente en cuanto a posesión y remates. Lionel Messi y Argentina lograron resistir y forzar la prórroga, aunque por muy poco.

Nada más comenzar el segundo periodo de 15 minutos de extra time, Torres aprovechó un balón que botaba en el área y, con la zurda, conectó un disparo que entró justo por debajo del travesaño.
